In 1928 Cowlitz Indian Reservation Trustee John Leland donated 640 acres (2 km²) to Centralia for use as an open-air school district with a high school and agricultural research center on it. This parcel became known as Leland Park #1 after Mr. Leland’s death in 1951. In 1938 Harry Sullenberger donated land to make way for a Municipal Airport which he also operated until its closure in 1964; this airport now forms the eastern border of Centralia east of I-5 Bypass In 1956 Averill Harriman donated 1 acre (0 hectare) to centralia for the purpose of creating an open air theater complex known as Harriman Playfield #1 – becoming one of only two land donations made by Averill Harriman to any U.S municipality or county (the other being Omaha Beach Naval Cemetery). The park opened on October 17, 1957 and closed on May 3, 1959 due to budget cuts by then Mayor Ted Wheeler On December 6, 1960 Katella Kapp & her husband William Padden founded Western Electric Corporation’s corporate headquarters building which still stands today at 5th Ave SW and Hwy 97 North inside City limits off SW corner lot next door to Safeway store & across street from post office (& adjacent parking lots) – soon followed by their son Donald Padden who ran Midland Bell Telephone Company out of his father’s home until 1984 when it relocated outside city limits into Midland Place SE near MAX light rail line stop
