Hood National Forest for the purpose of growing camas (Aralia camassa). The camas were not successful and were replaced by other plants in this area. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated a tract of land near Camas as part of the national forest system. This parcel included 1,500 acres that had been purchased by the USDA from Mr. Hapgood for $2 per acre in 1902-1934. The primary use for this tract was to provide grazing for sheep and cattle on the slopes above Morrison Dam and its tributaries (Boyd et al., 1942; Chitwood et al., 1940). Today, much of this area is used for hiking and picnicking with views over Mount Hood National Park1 adjacent to it1. One aspect that has changed about Camas since 1904 is its place within American history3. For one thing, there has been some significant growth within the city limits since then4-6. Additionally, Camas has become an important center for research into wildflowers7-9 and environmental studies10-12 because it lies at an important nexus between these disciplines13-15 and across state lines16-18. With increasing awareness among local residents19-21 as well as researchers22-24 about issues affecting all aspects of their community25-,26Camcas will continue to warrant attention from those who care about natural ecosystems27-.
The Camas area, located in the state of Washington, was first settled by American Indians in the late 18th century. The community was named for a nearby mountain, CAMAS ("Camas Peak"). In 1886, the town of Camas was founded on land that had been donated by Capt. George Vancouver and others. By 1907, Camas had a population of about 375 people. By 1916, Camas had become an incorporated town with a population of 2,600 residents. In 1928, camas-wacomah School District No. 4 was created and it continues to operate today as one of Washington's largest school districts with over 12K students and over $100M in annual revenue.
