Camas is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 15,564 at the 2010 census. Camas is located on the west bank of the Columbia River and was founded by fur traders in 1811. It became a town in 1868 and an incorporated city in 1907. The name "Camas" comes from Chief Camas's word for "place where salmon spawn." The first Europeans to visit what is now Camas were fur traders looking for land to trade with the Native Americans. In 1811 they entered into a treaty with Chief Seattle that gave them four leagues (14 miles) of land east of present-day Tacoma on which to settle. They named their new settlement after Chief Camas's mythical home, Kasachiawapamakanac Lake or "the Great Waters". The post office calledCamas until January 1, 1909 when it changed its name to Spokane because of theinglow growth of nearby Spokane City. Postmaster General James K. Polk announced on February 3, 1909 that postal service would be discontinued between Tacoma and Spokane due to increasing railroad construction northward along the banks of the river. As result, most mail traffic between these cities stopped before December 31, 1909; only occasional parcels were still sent through Spokane until 1913 when Megargee Electric Railway reached Spokane via Sound Transit RailLink and began deliveringmail there

Camas is located in Kitsap County, Washington, and was once part of the Salish nation. The first European to visit Camas was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542. He named it Isla de las Misiones after his Catholic mission to convert the natives here. The area now known as Camas was a small Native village at the time of Cabrillo's arrival. After a few years, the village grew large enough for him and his men to build a chapel and live in style. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1604 by Father José Santos Menéndez with help from Spain. In 1792, when the Spanish empire collapsed and Mexico gained independence, Camas became part of Mexico City until 1821 when it reverted back to Kitsap County under American rule. In 1851, George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and discovered what would become Tacoma Bay. On July 7, 1852 he named it Snohomish Bay after General George Akeley who had helped organize Seattle's first town election that same year as governor of Washington Territory. Vancouver also donated land for Yakima Valley Railroad which served as the commercial center for Camas before its incorporation into Yakima County in 1886 During World War II (1939-1945), Camas played an important role in United States military efforts against Japan by housing troops during the Battle of Iwo Jima while Japanese forces were attacking nearby Waneta Naval Air Station%. Camas also hosted occupation troops during World War II as well as numerous other civic events such as an annual Fourth of July parade through downtown where local bands play patriotic tunes throughout the day
