Camas is a town in Walla Walla County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. The Camas post office was established on December 12, 1855 and closed on March 15, 1959. The first settler in what is now Camas was George Chapman who arrived in 1848. He platted the community of Columbia on the eastern edge of today's Camas and named it after his home state of New York. The first store in town was built by John Crippen and opened in 1850. In 1865, Capt.[later] Isaac Stevens founded an agricultural colony near present-day Camas which he called "Stevens Island". When the island was acquired by Washougal County in 1889 it became part of Camas Township. In 1902, land east of the Willamette River that would become downtown Camas were purchased from George Aiken for $1 million dollars. On May 6th 1906 residents gathered to dedicate a park adjacent to Willamette University which would later be known as Pioneer Park (now Harmon Park). This event marked the beginning of what would become one of Seattle's most popular areas for shopping and entertainment with its many small businesses lining Pioneer Avenue between First Avenue South and South King Street. The city annexed much of Walla Walla County during annexation proceedings following World War II including much of downtown Camas along with sections of north side Pioneer Ave., east side Fourth Ave., south side Third Ave., west side First Ave., as well as portions around present day Adams Lake Road/Pioneer Drive/. At this time much commercial development took place along Cherry Street (northwest corner), Union Pacific Railroad tracks northerly (east corner), Pioneer Avenue SE (southwest corner) & Adams Lake Road/Pioneer Drive SW ( southeast corner) until those areas were razed or developed anew during the 1960s for suburban housing developments such as Camelback Ridge Estates & Hawthorne Place Development On July 1st 1957 voters approved Measure I which designated all unincorporated land within Seattle’s limits within camasa boundaries except Allen Valley as city limits effective July 1st 1957 paving way for future annexation efforts though not all properties annexed were located within camasa boundaries specifically some located just southside along 5th Ave NE . Many people considered this area annexable because there had been no vote against it since passage but due to political maneuvering by then Mayor Norm Coleman nothing happened until 1979 when CAMAS voted to secede from Seattle over zoning changes brought about by then City Councilmember Tim Burgess making himcamasa mayor instead On October 16th1979 CAMAS successfully seceded from Seattle over zoning changes brought about by then City Councilmember Tim Burgess making himcamasa mayor instead becoming Pierce county
