In 1863–64 United States troops burned down several buildings on the remaining portion of the Kelowna Valley reserve for reasons unknown but likely due to anti-Indian sentiment at that time among white settlers living in Northwestern Washington following months of civil unrest over slavery issues at Fort Sumter along with rumors that Indians were using fire power against whites (the so called " Klondike Gold Rush"). In 1865 American forces abandoned all claims within present day King County and founded Tacoma while Beavercreek lay adjacent to Klondike City limits under Ulysses S Grant administration as part as compensation for lost land holdings during Civil War years (see Puget Sound Boundaries). A few years later Congress passed legislation creating Yakima National Forest southeastward from Tacoma across Lake Noname into which all or nearly all current commercial fishing rights extending into British Columbia had been leased back by Royalty Company Fishing Co.. Camas, Washington is a town in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,633 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The name Camas comes from the Native American word "kamasa." In 1881, when Seattle and Tacoma were designated as separate towns, Camas residents voted to become one town. The first post office was established in Camas on October 10th, 1881. The town had a population of only 12 people when it incorporated as a city on January 3rd of 1907. On February 20th 1907 an act was passed by the City Council to annex portions of Auburn and Snohomish counties to form Camas. This annexation created new suburbs outside of downtown that continue to be populated today by people from those counties. In 1916 Camas became the third city in Snohomish County after Shoreline and Lynnwood. It remained an agricultural community until World War II when defense industries led to growth inCamas and other nearby communities with engineering and manufacturing jobs during that time period
