The name change to Camas in 1872 because of a dispute about whether it should be pronounced "kam-a" or "caman". In 1907, Camas became an incorporated village and then a city in 1911. Camas annexed parts of neighboring townships in 1928, 1938, and 1949. The local economy has been based primarily on agriculture since before World War II when camas (a type of soil) began being grown for its commercial value as a flour food product. Today, CAMAS also provides employment for about 100 people involved with various aspects of rural life such as farm work, milling hay, making cheese, etc., all while providing education opportunities for more than 450 students from grades pre-K through 12th grade. A major factor contributing toCamas' growth over the years has been its location within easy reach of both Yakima Valley's agricultural production potential and Interstate 5 which connects Seattle to Portland; both cities have helped contribute significantly to CAMAS' economic development over time. Some examples include: A new elementary school opened in CAMAS in 2006 which replaced an older building that had become too dilapidated for student use; A new hospital opened up near CAMAS in 2009 which serves patients from throughout the Yakima Valley; The expansion of Interstate 5 into this area also made possible more jobs for people living near CAMAS - resulting not only in increased economic development but also easier access to transportation options
