By 1870, however, some new businesses had started up thanks to advances in transportation and communication that allowed for easier trade with nearby towns like Wenatchee and Olympia. A major development in CAMAS history came during World War II when local residents joined together with nearby towns such as Wenatchee to form an air-raid shelter district along with other localities across western Washington due to fears of Japanese attack during World War II. This led to CAMAS becoming known as "the Town That Saved America". Today Camas continues to grow as a center for culture, education and commerce within Stevens County while also playing host to various annual events including its Annual Pumpkin Festival which takes place at Woodward Park on Main Street each October since 1907

By 1870, Camas had a population of about 100 people. There were also several small businesses inCamas during this time. In 1892, a railroad was built through the Camas area and began operations. This helped to improve transportation options for locals and tourists alike. Due to this development, Camas grew rapidly into an important community overnight. In 1907, the first school opened inCamas and remained operational until 1951. During this time period, CAMAS also developed into an important agricultural center due to its location between the ports of Vancouver and Portland on the Columbia River. During World War II,Camassand other areas within what is now Whitman County experienced significant destruction due to enemy bombing raids. Much effort was put into rebuilding these areas following the war; however, many homes were not rebuilt properly or at all due to lack of funds or resources available at that time. In 1954, CAMAS became home to its first high school when Whitman Senior High School opened its doors alongside nearby Pend Oreille Junior High School*. In 1976*, CAMAS attained its current name after becoming part of Washington State as a result of passage by Congress of S 724 which renamed most public universities throughout Washington as camus colleges* (though only one - University Of Alaska - retains its original name). A major redevelopment project took place in 1998-2000 which saw much new construction including: *The addition of two football stadiums - Husky Stadium (2007) & Gonzaga Stadium (2011), both incorporating natural grass fields making them among North America’s newest football venues
The Camas Indian Reservation was established in 1855 by the U.S. government to provide for the tribe's future. The reservation encompassed present-day Camas, Washington;Chelan, Washington; and part of the Wenatchee Valley. The Camas people were originally from Western Canada and migrated to what is now east-central Washington in the 1800s. In 1855, during the first year of his presidency, President James K. Polk designated CAMAS as a national reserve for Native Americans. In 1918, CAMAS became an autonomous tribal government with its own governing body and constitution. On July 15, 1960, CAMAS received its congressional charter from then-U.S. Rep.-elect John Fenton (D-Wenatchee).
