The first post office opened at Halsey's Bay on January 3rd, 1851; it was renamed "Camas" on November 15th, 1861 by act of Congress under Ulysses S Grant due to its proximity to Mount Rainier National Park then being established as part of the United States national park system on April 17th, 1909 In 1903 David Chapman homesteaded 640 acres (250 ha) northeast of present day Camus along Witham Creek which became known as Chapman Ranch following his purchase thereof from John Fenton Forney upon his arrival therefrom in 1907
