Camas, Washington is a census-designated place in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,798 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The name Camas comes from the word "camasset" which means "a small shrub or small tree with leaves that are broadly lobed and divided into 5 to 10 leaflets." The old name for this place was Chief Joseph's Campground because it was where Chief Joseph stopped on his way from Canada to visit the Seattle area in 1847. The first residents of Camas were Indians who traded goods with the settlers along what is now Interstate 90. In 1889 when Tacoma became a city, most of Tacoma's land was given to Puget Sound School District #2 as part of an effort by Mayor George Earle Toombs to create racial balance in Tacoma through annexation of surrounding townships. This gave rise to the name "Tacoma Indian Reservation" which still applies today to some areas within Camas boundaries including portions of North Park and Southcenter neighborhoods. In 1911 when Camas became an incorporated town, its citizens voted not to annex any neighboring townships so as not contribute financially towards developing Tacoma but instead build their own school system and make their own decisions about government services such as zoning and fire prevention etcetera. With this decision, Camas set itself apart from other communities in Pierce County during what has come to be known as its "self-reliance" period. It wasn't until after World War II thatCamas started opening up economically due in part to military production facilities located adjacent to its borders - these brought new residents and businesses who invested money into Camazian economy over time until it reached full strength again by 2000 CE

These early Christians helped develop trade relationships with other groups in the region and built churches and homes among the local Native Americans. In 1898, Congress passed an act that created Mount Baker National Forest within Puget Sound National Monument boundaries; this area became home to many different tribes who were struggling for survival amidst encroaching white settlement. One such tribe was the Camassians, who had long been trading with settlers along Stevens Creek Road near present-day Tacoma (now part of Seattle). When federal officials decided that these traders should be protected from white encroachment under a law called "the Gadsden Purchase," they offered up tracts of land along Stevens Creek Road for use by the tribal members on reservations throughout Northwest America – including what is now Washington State shoresline! In 1901, when Congress amended this law giving all Indian reservations full ownership of their land holdings within national forests/monuments (formerly managed by individual private landowners), both Stevens Creek Road and parts of today’s Tacoma were included within CAMAS’ exclusive domain! The first permanent residents in what is now Camas County were the Klamath people who arrived in 1825. In 1847, the United States acquired land north of present-day Seattle and established a military post called Fort Stevens in what is now Yakima County. The post served as a training ground for U.S. troops during the Mexican-American War and later became a gold mining center. In 1859, Congress approved an act to create what is now Camas County from parts of Whatcom and Skagit counties. In 1862, after numerous floods destroyed most of the town of Camas on the Columbia River, government officials decided to build a new town on higher ground about five miles east of present-day Camas City. The name for this new town was Grays Harbor and it began operation as an agricultural community in 1865. During World War II, Grays Harbor became an important naval base because it housed several submarines and destroyer vessels used in coastal defense against Japanese forces stationed at Malaya and other locations in Southeast Asia.
