The Camas region of Washington was first settled by the Pomo people in the late 18th century. The area that now makes up Camas was part of what is now the Yakima and Douglas Territories when those territories were acquired by the United States in 1881. In 1907, the Camas Indian Reservation was established, and in 1959 it became a part of the newly created Washington State Territory. Today,Camas is a census-designated place (CDP) located within Olympia County on the south side of Olympia River. The town of Camas has a population of about 100 people as of 2000. The original inhabitants of this area were Pomo people who lived along the southern bank of the river from where they harvested acorns and collected other wild plants and animals for their food and clothing. Camping, fishing, hunting and gathering were all common activities here before white settlement began in earnest around 1885. Initially, many settlers came to this area to purchase land or start new businesses related to agriculture or timbering – many aspects that would later become essential industries in Puget Sound region. By 1890, there were over 20 businesses operating hereabouts, including two ferryboats transporting goods downriver to Tacoma; an importer/exporter of lumber; a post office;a hotel;a grocery store;and several churches. By 1915, most residents had left for various reasons – some due to World War I service (many men had enlisted), others because they found work elsewhere in Washtenaw County or outside Washington state altogether during that time period. However, about 150 individuals continued living here until 1951 when all but 10 moved away after advances in transportation made it easier for them to commute into larger cities like Seattle or Tacoma without having to go through what is now known as CAMAS Township on their way there. In 1957 CAMAS became one of three towns within Olympia County when it split from neighboring Frontier Township following creation of that county’s first district office west thereof (the other two being SeaTac and Bellevue). Today CAMAS remains its own distinct community with its own police department and school systems while also providing services unto neighboring communities such as SeaTac which are also CDPs today with populations exceeding 100 thousand residents according to 2010 Census data .

Over time, however, as prices for gold declined and production dwindled, many small villages lost their economic viability and fell apart. Today only a few remain – Nisqually (now part of Tacoma), Goldendale (now part of Bellingham), Dulzier (now part of Yakima), Tellico village (now part of Renton), Green Lake Village (now known as Auburn) – all located within miles of each other on hills that overlook the Columbia River Estuary.
