Camas is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The Camas School District serves Camas and neighboring towns of Beacon Hill and North Bend. The first Europeans to visit what is now Camas were fur traders who traveled through the area in 1811-12. John Jacob Astor's Fur Company established a trading post here in 1819. In 1863, General George Custer and his cavalry Brigade stopped at this site for water supplies on their way from Fort Vancouver to fight the Union army at Gettysburg. In 1881, Democrat James Gifford became the first white person to own land in present day Camas when he purchased two acres (0.8 km²) of land east of State Route 5A from Isaac Newton Phelps Jr.. Phelps had come overland from Whatcom County and platted it into three blocks: Block 1 included parts of what are today Spirit Lake Road and South Park Avenue; Block 2 extended west along State Route 5A to include what are now First Avenue and Eastlake Boulevard; Blocks 3-5 were located east of First Avenue between South Park Boulevard and Westpark Drive). In 1908, Republican Alfred Ewing donated 10 acres (40,000 m²) north of current day Broadway Street to the city for school purposes as part of an housing development called North Side Extension which also included Beacon Hill to the south and North Bend to the north. In 1916, Pierce Callahan donated 16 acres (70 000 m²) southwest of Broadway Street for use as a municipal park with baseball diamonds, tennis courts etc., calling it "Callahan Farm". Camas was founded in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver and Lieutenant John Fraser. The name is derived from the Columbia River, where Captain Vancouver saw a number of salmon while exploring the area. The first town in Camas County was founded in 1847 at the site of present-day Milton. In 1924, Camas became the county seat after moving from Milton. The Camas Dam was completed in 1933 and provided irrigation for over a million people on the Olympic Peninsula. The dam has been replaced by two additional dams which provide water for Seattle, Tacoma and other areas on Washington state's west coast. Camas is located at (48.860936, -122.577972). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2 square miles (6 km²), all of it land. As of 2010, there were 14 businesses with an annual revenue over $100,000 in Camas City limits
Camas was founded by the Whitman family in 1853. The town was named for John Camas, a local settler who helped found the town. The first post office was established in 1854 and the first school opened in 1855. In 1860, Camas became a part of Yakima County.
