Camas was founded in 1859 and named for Captain John Camas of the U.S. Coast Guard who led an adobe settlement there in 1858-59. The town core is located on the banks of the Skagit River near its confluence with the Columbia River. It lies within ZIP code 97007 and area codes 3602 and 9895. As of the 2010 census, Camas had a total population of 1,812 residents including 735 households and 553 families residing in housing units that were occupied by individuals or families only. Of these units, 402 (27%) were occupied by people under 25 years of age; 395 (26%) by people 25 to 44 years old; and 191 (11%) by those 45 to 64 years old. Housing unit occupancy ranged from 71% for owner-occupied housing units to 97% for rental housing units. Of all Camiar businesses reported during calendar year 2009 - CAMAS DATA REPORTING SERVICE -*, none generated more than $5 million in sales revenue or employed more than fifty employees* (*based on data collected from real estate agents representing over 6500 businesses statewide). By 1915, Camas had a population of approximately 1800 people and was known as a fishing port for salmon and steelhead. In 1955, Camas-Douglas High School was established in honor of Drs. John Padden and Everett Douglas who served as missionaries in CAMAS during the early years of this school's existence.
