Camas, Washington is a small town in the state of Washington located in Clallam County. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. Camas is one of the oldest towns in Washington, founded on July 3, 1799 by Captain George Vancouver and his party of fur traders. In 1853, the town was moved from its original location to its current location about six miles east of downtown on the Yakima River. The town has undergone many changes over time, including a name change to Camas Junction in 1923 and a fire that destroyed most of the town on December 10th, 1957. The first white person to live in what is now Camas was Capt. George Vancouver who set up camp here circa 1799 after exploring nearby Puget Sound for potential new land grants. He named his new settlement for British Columbia’s Chief-in-Chief David Thompson – “Kamaschatka” or “the headlands” referring to some tall mountains near Discovery Bay where he thought he might find salt water resources. After weeks of exploration and scouting around this area they found no suitable land nearer than their present site so they built their first log cabin here on July 3rd,1799 which still stands today as part of Camas history museum! In 1853 when Oregon became a U.S., Camas became part of it as well and saw rapid growth due to its proximity to bothOregon and Washinton Dc., with businesses starting up like lumberyards and flour mills along with schoolhouses catering to local kids growing up during this time period! Today much like then CAMAS remains an vibrant community full of life with cultural events throughout year long!

The Camas community was founded in 1859 by John H. Stevens, a fur trader and entrepreneur who purchased land east of the Lewis River. The town site was chosen because it had a flat surface on which to build houses, and also because the river's current would not damage them. Stevens named his settlement Camas after the local Columbia River tributary, CAMAS meaning "clear water." In 1863, Stevens sold the town to James A. Smith, who developed it into an agricultural center that became one of the most successful in Washington Territory. By 1917, Camas had a population of about 3,000 people and was home to two schools and two churches. In 1943, during World War II, Camas became a strategic bomber target due to its position near Seattle; however no bombing occurred as result of this designation.
