Camas, Washington is a small town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. Camas is located on the eastern border of the county and is part of the Federal Way Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies along Interstate 5 and State Route 97. The first permanent settlers in what would become Camas were farmers who arrived in 1859. What would become Camas was established as a village in 1881 when it was annexed by Tacoma. The name change came about because of disputes over which name should be given to the new town between Tacoma and Seattle residents. The post office called Camas "Camas" from 1901 until 1943 when it changed to Federal Way. In 1951, the name was changed back toCamas after being recommended by then-Mayor John Waddell as an alternate for Federal Way which had been pronounced "Federated". In 1957, construction began on Interstate 5 through central Pierce County and Camas became one of the first towns along I-5 to experience traffic congestion caused by the highway's construction boom. To alleviate traffic problems, voters passed a referendum asking that I-5 be routed northeasterly instead of east–west through central Pierce County so that camels could walk or bike rather than drive their cars to work each day. I-5 Boulevard remainscamas' only arterial street even though much else has changed within its boundaries since its creation: most notably its location within downtown federal way making it nearly impossible for outsiders to see or visit what used to be CAMAS until they stroll down main Street (which retains its original namesakespun moniker) or take a drive up I-5 south towards Tukwila while looking out over Swenzer Lake from across his property line
