He worked his way up through the ranks of Scottish society, starting as an errand boy before becoming a tailor. In 1836, he opened his own tailors shop in Tacoma,Washington. It wasn't until 1876 that he decided to open a ammo store in Camas County. At first,Ransom only sold rifle rounds and shotgun shells; however, within a few years he had developed a successful line of pistol rounds and shotguns accessories. In 1886, he began selling handguns under the name "Johnnie's Gun Shop". By 1902, Johnnie's Gun Shop had become one of the largest gun stores in Northwest America. Over time, Camas Ammunition has continued to grow into one of the leading firearms retailers in the Western US. This cartridge featured a nickel-cadmium bullet that was coated with silver nitrate to increase its incendiary power. However, by 1865 Camas had become an important commercial center due to its access to river transportation and its location along the Columbia River.
