Camas is a small town in Washington state, United States. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. Camas is located on the Olympic Peninsula within Olympic National Park. The first European tosight of what is now Camas was by Juan Diaz de la Rúa, who sighted it on July 4, 1775 while sailing the Pacific Northwest coast in command of HMS "Discovery". On July 5, 1823ime land grant from John C. Frémont to George Wickersham allowed for development of this area which would become known as Camas Prairie. A post office called Camas was established in 1876, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1912, lumberman William Hargrave built a cabin near present-day Highway 99 south of town for his family and their employees logging the nearby hillsides. By 1924, Hargrave had changed his name to David Pemberton and built an airplane hangar adjacent to his cabin which he used as a base camp for fly-in/fly-out operations during World War II logging trips over Puget Sound from his ranch north of Tacoma. In 1951 Pemberton donated the hangar to the City of Seattle for use as city hall's visitor center; it continues today as part of Pierpont Hall downtown Seattle. One important aspect of early growth in Camas were its water resources: More than half of all homes were built before 1910 without access to public water supplies (the only places then like this were streetcar suburbs). With limited access to reliable piped water brought about by construction projects such as Interstate 5 Project and later Centralia dam replacement project Camas relied heavily upon private wells drilled deep intoLookout Creek Valley resulting in many wells polluted with heavy metals including lead and zinc well after years when people knew nothing about these pollutants .
