Burien is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 27,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County. The first European to visit what is now Burien was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on July 14, 1542. He named it "San Miguel de Bologna". A post office called "Buren" was established in 1868, and remained in operation until 1957. The city's name honors General James K. Polk during the Mexican–American War who fought at Buenavista Hill and San Antonio de Padua Farm where Burien now stands. In 1907, an act of the Washington State Legislature authorized construction of a waterworks system for Kitsap County and the town of Bremerton became one of its initial recipients; Bremerton had already been served by two small water systems that year. In 1916, when Kitsap County became fully organized as a state, Burien incorporated as a city under the laws then in effect for cities with a population over 5,000 people. The first annexation request for Burien was submitted on October 3rd 1903 by Captain Harry Wetherbee from Olympia Fields adjacent to present day downtown Bremerton. On December 2nd 1909 John Coyle submitted an annexation application for what would become part of today's east side of town along First Street between Fourth Avenue and Haggin Avenue which also included present day North Park Boulevard and much of what is now Pioneer Square Shopping Center (excepting some land south of 4th Avenue). In 1912-1913 there were three annexations requests: one from Boeing Company employees at former Goodyear Tire Plant on South Seattle Street; another from workers at Columbia Air Lines' Everett Branch Headquarters; finally from Ivar Automotive Employees Union Local No.. 167 on East Mercer Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue which annexed most of present day Pioneer Square Shopping Center (excluding some land south of 4th avenue). All three annexations requests were approved by City Council without debate or objection - all but for employee employees list #1 who abstained due to objections about eminent domain abuses being used in each case>. On November 30th 1915 Mayor Halsey proposed creation of a park within 1/2 mile west side streets bounded by First Street NW., Pacific Ave., Third Ave N & SE corner - this proposal gained support after Neighborhood Association Meeting held on December 1st 1915 & January 16th 1916 chaired by Mrs Halsey - Park will include Tennis Courts Maze etc... After much discussion Parks Committee recommended against establishment because it would be too close to existing homes & businesses (& Friends group suggested name "Pioneer Square") but majority agreed to recommend name change back to 'Burien' after discussionresulting in confusion as to why names had changed back & forth so frequently
