The first permanent European settlement in what is today Burien was founded by Captain George Vancouver on July 29, 1792 as Fort Canville. In 1892, annexation by Seattle made it an incorporated city and established its own government with a Mayor and City Council system similar to that of Seattle. Prior to this time all burian municipal functions were overseen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police headquartered at nearby Bellingham until their move to downtown Seattle in 1903. On November 3, 1907, as part of efforts to promote westerning withinKing County through various campaigns such as "The Great White Way" program and promotional events such as the centennial celebration of Puget Sound gold discoveries (1897), King County voted 1-to-1 to annex Burrensville which had been unincorporated for several years due to lack of population or interest therein
