Burien is a small town in the Chelan County of Washington, located on the eastern shore of Lake Washington. It was founded by Native Americans in 1854 as part of the Seattle-Tacoma area. The population was 5,602 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Burien was Captain George Vancouver in 1792. He named it "Nisqually" after his sea voyages up and down Puget Sound. In 1804, John Jacob Astor purchased land adjacent to what is now Burien from the Chisholm people and builtAstoria House on lot No. 2 (now Astoria Park). In 1851, David Kingsbury established a ferry service betweenSeattle and Tacoma over Lake Washington which he called "Kingsbury's Ferry". The first post office opened in 1853 with Wm. Halsey as receiver and clerk. By 1860, there were six houses in town with a total population of 139 inhabitants; all but two had been destroyed by fire within five years following its establishment. On April 24, 1861, King County became one precinct with seven townships within it when it was organized into county government; however, only four townships – including Burien – voted to make themselves separate counties on November 15th due to lack of evidence that they needed to be so; instead they merged into Chelan County effective January 1st, 1912 On June 3rd 1893 issue of "The Columbian", an early Seattle newspaper published an advertisement for sale of 1000 acres (400 hectares) east side of I-5 just north of downtown Seattle for $1 million (). This ad has become known as the "Burien Sale". After much deliberation by Commissioners James Purdy and Augustus Ogden among other interested parties including representatives from Tacoma, Olympia and Moses Asch (a prominent real estateman), King County decided not to sell land near downtown Seattle outfitty because there were already too many businesses near that spot without any potential development on offer for them - leaving Burrideen undeveloped until 1919 when John Fenton subdivided it into parcels for residential use . Furthermore this decision effectively stopped future efforts by developers such as Fenton to establish new suburbs around downtown Seattle while also preventing annexation or purchase by neighboring jurisdictions which would have created another center city like Redmond or Bellevue if those plans had gone through
