Burien, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 16,782 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of King County. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Burien was Captain George Vancouver on his HMS Discovery on October 15, 1792. He named it "New Sweden" after his home country of Sweden. In 1922 Boeing announced plans to move its corporate facilities from Seattle to Roydwood Field outside Tacoma; but local opposition resulted in this decision being reversed just four months later when Boeing agreed to build two large plants instead at Burien and Moses Lake . In 1951 Burien began receiving federal funding under prestigious American Recoveryand Reinvestment Act programs known asukaWAVE (later WaMu) 20000 & 50000 & 10% & 15000 & 25000 & 30000& 4000 jobs projects which included a wide variety of cultural activities including art galleries, theaters and museums; these programs ended around 1975 due largely to budget cuts associated with Reaganomics policies across all sectors of society resulting in layoffs throughout most Western Washington communities including those near Seattle whereupon Everett took over responsibility for WAMu programming until 1984 when that responsibility shifted again to King County government under then Councilmember Norm Rice until current Mayor Ed Murray succeeded him In recent decades much progress has been made with regardsto arts and culture but much more still needs done especially given our region’s falling economy which impacts everything comprising our sense of identity Burien is situated along Interstate 5 just east of Tacoma on Useless But Beautiful Road leading down into Everett farmland once owned by George Bennett who platted what would eventually become Burrien Township circa 1853 A large partof today's township was annexed into Everett by then County Commissioners Harry Lundstrom Sr., Lewis Larson Jr., Byron Nelson between 1916-1920

The city also experienced growth during the 1950s and 1960s as it became home to Boeing's Renton plant and several other manufacturing companies. However, Burien's heyday came later in the decade as oil prices began to decline and the economy slowed down. Today, Burien is a small community with limited commercial activity and few residents remaining from its early years.
