The first school was built in 1807, and the first post office was established in 1811. In 1832, the city became a county seat, and Burien annexed the neighboring towns of North Bend and Everett in 1880. The Seattle-based Puget Sound Railway reached Burien in 1899 and incorporated as a village within the city limits that year. In 1907,Burien became an independent municipality with its own government and elected its first mayor that year. In 1970, it merged with nearby SeaTac to form the current city of Seattle.
