Burien is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 24,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and the largest city in the Puget Sound area. Burien was founded on December 6, 1881 by Orson Welles as an unincorporated community on what is now Burien Waterfront Park. On November 7, 1916, it became a city under the name of Seattle after a vote by City Council. The first mayor of Seattle was David C. Helmsley and Burien had no voting power until 1945 when it became a charter member of the American Community Survey District No. 5 which has given it voting representation on King County Council since then. The economy of Burien has been based largely on tourism with its beaches and waterfalls hosting many cruise ship passengers each year; however other services have developed such as healthcare and technology companies that are headquartered there including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Corporation's Redmond campus/research center Campus Way Southwest

Burien is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 26,005 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in King County and the second-most populous city in Puget Sound region after Seattle. The name "Burien" was chosen by the City Council on November 15, 1907 to commemorate Territorial Captain John A. Burlingame's visit to that area on January 8, 1907 as part of their celebration of 50 years of Tacoma Municipal government. The first people known to live in what is now Burien were the Klamath people who lived near present day Soquel and used natural resources such as salmon and game for food and clothing. They also built traditional villages with mud lodges which are still seen around town today. In 1852, Russian fur traders arrived in what is now King County and began trading with indigenous peoples including the Klamath People. They found various resource deposits including coal and gold but no one bothered to develop them because they were not thought to be valuable enought . In 1854 Chief Joseph Potlatch led an effort to find a route from Seattle overland throughinterior Western Washington to Puget Sound where he hoped it would open up new trade opportunities for Russia In 1886 a group of businessmen led by George Wickersham founded Puget Sound Navigation Company (later called USS Tacoma) to provide shipping services between Seattle and Asia under contract with Japanese companies interested in acquiring much needed oil resources during World War I In 1918 Burlingame returned from his trip across Western Washington inspecting water supplies for potential settlement on land that would later become parts of Prince Rupert National Park On October 1st 1907 King County voters passed a resolution declaring November 15th as burien's birthday A year later Captain John A. Burlingame visited burien while on his way back from exploring Canadian territorial waters off British Columbia
The first European to visit the area now known as Burien was Juan Rodriguez de Porto, who sighted land on May 10, 1792 while exploring the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Burien was founded by Capt. George Vancouver in 1799. British Columbia and Washington were united as a single province in 1871, and the city of Seattle was founded in 1907. The Puget Sound Bridge opened to traffic on November 1, 1932, linking Seattle with Olympia and eventually all of southern Puget Sound. In 1984, Microsoft moved its headquarters from Bellevue to Redmond after 40 years in Seattle
