The nearby Evergreen State College followed suit with its own campus expansion in 1972–1974 timeframe bringing the total student body to over 2700 students today! As Puget Sound boomed with development over the next few decades there were large-scale layoffs throughout most of Boeing; this negatively impacted many local businesses that were forced out of business or closed altogether due to lack of market competition from larger companies such as Microsoft and Western Airlines Everett Airport became known as "the Death Zone".
