Burien, Washington is a small town in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Burien were Scottish Presbyterians who arrived in 1855. They built a log cabin on Cabin Creek and named it "Burien." After a few years, they sold the cabin to John McMillin and his family.McMillin served as Mayor of Burien from 1907 to 1911 and 1917 to 1919. He also owned land adjacent to present-day Burien and constructed several buildings there including the original courthouse and jail. The town's first post office was established in 1909. In 1928, a group of businessmen decided to build an airfield on what is now Airport Way Northeast in order to provide more opportunities for Burien's businesses. The airfield became known as Boeing Field after Boeing bought majority interest in it in 1934. In 1945, Boeing merged with rival Lockheed Aircraft Company and renamed its new company after both companies' founder – Jens Thygesen Liebig – which led to some confusion among locals because both companies had their own logos at that point (Boeing had Primary Red on its planes while Lockheed had Primary Blue). However, soon enough everyone got used to the new names and Burien continued using them until 1984 when they were supplanted by King County's new airport name system: Burke Lakefront Airport (KLGA). Burien is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Burien is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The name "Burien" was given to the town by Major General George Crockett in 1851 while he commandeered an Indian pony from nearby Mount Vernon and named it after his previous encampment on the site. The first permanent settlers in what would become Burien were farmers who journeyed overland from British Columbia in 1849. In 1854, Abraham Lincoln visited the area and recommended that Washington Territory be formed out of a portion of Oregon as its capital city. On July 16, 1861, territorial legislature approved establishment of Burien as the new Territorial Capital City with a population of 1,500 citizens. In 1863 Captain John Stroud led a detachment of militia under Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Stevens against Native Americans living near Black Lake within present-day Seattle limits. The battle known as Battle around Black Lake resulted in twenty-six Native American fatalities and three U.S.-allied militiamen killed including Stevens himself; this event helped solidify Ulysses S Grant's support for annexation of Washington Territory into the Union as part of the Civil War effort. The Town Hall building which served as both government headquarters for Burien and home to many local businesses until 1959 has been preserved as part of downtown Burien since that time history buffs can visit every day during business hours! On October 25th 1914 America's first airmail service began operations between Seattle and Spokane using an Curtiss JN4A Hawk flying boat leased from Boeing Co., then owner [of] Puget Sound Airways Incorporated."
