The city has undergone several changes over the years: from a rural agricultural community with limited industry until becoming an industrial center with heavy manufacturing during World War II; thence becoming an upscale bedroom community forSeattle during the late 1960s and early 1970s; finally being transformed into an inner-city suburb following gentrification throughout most of the 1990s and 2000s under Mayor Greg Nickels' leadership

Burien is a small town in King County, Washington. It is the county seat of King County. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area before it became its own municipality in 2007. The name "Burien" is an Alaskan word meaning "place where all things are common." In 1881, Burien's first post office opened and served only residents of the town itself. The first settler in what would become Burien was William Pritchard who arrived in 1851 from Alaska and homesteaded on land that now includes most of downtown Burien. The first store in town was built by John Snively and Wm. Henson in 1865, just east of the present day Hyatt hotel on First Avenue North. By 1870 there were ten stores and eighty-six residents living hereabouts. By 1880 there were twenty-four stores, one hundred residents, two churches and a school providing education for both boys and girls until 1889 when it closed due to lack of funds following annexation into Seattle by King County! In 1907, after years of planning by various individuals and organizations such as the Chamber Of Commerce (founded 1890), Burien applied for incorporation as a village but failed to receive enough signatures from registered voters to be accepted into government form! On February 5th 1907 an act creating villages within King County finally passed with over fifty percent support from representatives from Anacortes/Burien; becoming incorporated as Village Of Burien with a population of seventy-eight souls! With this new status came responsibility for services such as fire protection, road maintenance etc., which would remain centralized through village governments until 1971 when they were reorganized into city government under Mayor Norm Rasmussen! At the time that City Of Burien formed it had three blocks long bounded by First Ave North (northwest side), Second Ave North (southwest side), Union St (southwest corner) & Cherry St (east side). Streets names at this time included: Union Street West (now Southcenter Blvd.), Yesteryear Boulevard East (& yesterdays Cedar Park Rd.), Third Ave Northeast (now Auburn St.) & Cherry St NE (& today's Renton Rd.). Today much has changed since then with much development taking place near First Ave NW including satellite shopping centers overrated Tilikum Island Marina & Safeco Field developments - making Downtown Urbana non existent!!
