Gun security in Burien, Washington began as a challenge. For over seventy years the city of Burien and its surrounding rural areas have been home to some of the most gun-friendly environments in the Puget Sound area. The Gun Control Act of 1934, which was passed following the assassination of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, made it illegal for people under twenty-one years old to possess or use any firearms without a license. Additionally, any person who was not registered with the state police could face criminal prosecution for ownership, transport, or use of a firearm. This restrictive legislation did not sit well with many citizens who enjoyed using their firearms to protect themselves and their families from criminals and other would-be assailants. In order to circumvent these laws and allow civilians to own firearms, Burien City Council voted in 1951 to establish an ordinance giving citizens the right to purchase handguns “with at least two months” notice to all others on property within one mile of where they resided. This ordinance also allowed individuals who were licensed law enforcement officers or members of national guard units the ability to possess handguns for personal protection purposes. Despite this effort by city officials, handgun ownership continued to be overwhelmingly restricted by county government until 1984 when then County Commissioner John Atkin introduced a bill that would have allowed citizens aged eighteen or older (who had reached adulthood) access to pistols for hunting and sporting purposes only if they possessed a valid hunting license from another state or country. The bill died in committee but generated enough public outcry that it was finally killed in 1990 when County Executive Norm Rice joined forces with county commissioners Pete Thomas (D) and Don Rasmussen (R) in introducing similar legislation that would have exempted residents age eighteen through thirty-nine from havingto obtain a pistolLicense if they owned four shotguns or more per month ATF estimated that there were approximately 1,500 active hunters age eighteen through thirty-nine operating out of Thurston County

The first post office opened in 1907 and was called "Odell". The first store in town opened on Main Street on October 15, 1907. By 1914, there were nine stores in town with a total population of about 150 people. By 1916, there were twenty-one stores with a total population of about 600 people; however, due to World War I and the Great Depression, these numbers decreased to about 350 by 1928 when the last store closed down. During World War II most residents served in the military or did odd jobs around their homes while others worked for Boeing Airplane Company or other businesses around town. A few residents also took advantage of government housing opportunities during that time period which helped keep local prices low while still providing affordable living conditions for many residents. After Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th 1941 almost all citizens left their homes save for some who hid inside until it ended; however most returned soon afterwards as events unfolded outside America seemed more chaotic than anything they could have imagined let alone prepared themselves for based on what they had seen prior. On July 7th 1945 Burien welcomed back numerous returning servicemen including those who had been missing since Pearl Harbor as well as mothers whose children had gone off to fight overseas – an event that continues to be celebrated annually today among both locals and visitors alike! Many current residents were born or raised here including Mayor John Hendrickson himself who has lived here his entire life! From 1949 until 1978 when it merged with neighboring North Bend into one municipality much discussion surrounded whether or not Burien should become part of Seattle but ultimately decided against it because community voted overwhelmingly against secession even though this would have resulted in higher taxes; instead they formed their own government separate from Seattle despite continuing communication between both municipalities which continued until1989 when North Bend disbanded again due to lack of growth/population split between them) . In 2006 councilman John Hendrickson unsuccessfully ran for mayor Against incumbent incumbent Lynn Woodall . At present day burien Town Council meets monthly with delegated authority from Township Manager Kaitlyn Cook
