Burien is an unincorporated community in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 2 at the 2000 census. It is located on State Route 9 east of the town of Wenatchee. The first permanent settler in what is now Burien was John Wesley Powell, who arrived there in 1869. He named it after his home town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, England. Arranged along a bluff overlooking the mouth of the Wenatchee River and its tributaries, Burien became a popular resort spot for vacationers during the late 1800s and early 1900s. After World War II, Burien experienced rapid growth as an agricultural center due to its location close to large wheat fields and irrigation canals. However, Burien's heyday ended with the start of development around Interstate 5 in the late 1960s. Today, much of Burien's commercial and residential activity takes place within or near Wenatchee itself

Burien is a small town in the U.S. state of Washington, located on the east side of the Puget Sound Peninsula. The population was 5,993 at the 2010 census. The name "Burien" comes from two Chinook words - kwah-wee and yah-nuh - meaning "shoreline point" or "headland". The first European to visit what is now Burien was Captain George Vancouver in 1792 during his official journey around Puget Sound as part of his mapping expedition for British Columbia. He named it Point Defiance after Prince George, Duke of Kent and Albany who was then commandant at Fort Nisqually on Elliott Bay. As early as 1807, Lieutenant John Ebey charted Burr Harbour on Admiralty Inlet and he named it Point Defiance because Admiral James Cook had visited that location in 1793 while exploring British Columbia's coast from Burr Harbour to Yale Head on Vancouver Island. In 1814, Navy Commander Robert Foote used Point Defiance as his anchorage for an amphibious landing during the Battle of Seattle which resulted in the United States victory over Britain at Queen's Park (now downtown Seattle). In 1899, when Burien became a city, the first mayor was Wm Hargrave (1901-02). A year later Harry Guild served as acting mayor until Don Ritchie could be elected with full powers in 1902. On December 8th 1903 Burien incorporated as a city under Washington State law No. 711 BC with a population of 3200 people including 1000 residents who lived in unincorporated areas outside the boundaries of city limits. A charter amendment #8783 Bill C-3 annexed most of Unincorporated Thurston County northward to include area lying within present day Burien limits July 1st 1907 making it a fully realized city with its own government and resources including fire services and other essential public works not available or affordable within neighboring towns or villages which had originally been part of said township etc .. . With this annexation came increased taxes amounting to $5 per capita levied against all citizens by City Council decree declaring such addition necessary for Caldwell Avenue Bridge construction etc .. . After many years Fruitport Ave light station was built just southwest of today’s Municipal Building entrance way opposite Public Library parking lot .. . Today most businesses along Caldwell Ave are situated inside Municipal Building complex near Halliburton Rd & Willamette Blvd
