In addition to these successes however there have been also several setbacks such as plans for a high school expansion which has yet to be realized and development nears what would be historic Burien Bridge which could take away valuable open space from the town center

Burien is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and one of the most populous towns in the United States. The Burien Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The first European to visit what is now Burien was Captain George Vancouver in 1792 during his exploration of Puget Sound. He named it "Vancouver" after himself, but no specific location for this settlement exists today. In 1813, John Jacob Astor founded an fur trading post not far from where Burien now stands called "Aurora." This post served as a halfway point for Astor's Fur traders as they traveled between Asia and North America. In 1821, James Kapp established Kapp Fort at what is now known as Kapp Landing on Seattle Bay north of modern-day Seattle. At this point, Puget Sound became known as the Great Lakes region because of its many islands including Haida Gwaii (now part of Canada) and Victoria Island off Olympia, Washington Territory (later state). In 1827, John Muir visited what is now Burien while exploring Mount Rainier National Park and wrote about his experience: "I passed through an open country communicating with Puget Sound by means of a sandy beach which extends across it some distance; then I proceeded up a narrow range or valley lying to the westward...the hills are high and abrupt...It appears that there has been hereabouts more than onePemberton Expedition since our arrival hereabouts". Later that year on July 24th, 1827 Muir published an article in "The American Review" entitled "A Walk Across Puget Sound", which detailed his journey from Bainbridge Island toSeattle via Yakima River Valley and present day Burien area. His description included sketches showing how he crossed different sections ofsound including current day Burien land: "...I went south along tidewater past diverse fishing ports—Port Angeles Ferry; Woolridge Ferry; Elliott Bay Bridge [now Interstate 5]; Port Orchard Ferry—and arrived at Elliott Bay near Bloomfield Point,...At Bloomfield Point I put back oar without getting wetted[sic]...having travelled over 27 miles through water so deep [that] boats could not enter."[1] Later that year Muir wrote about another crossing he made from US-Canada shore line opposite Elliott Bay:[2]: "...I reached Utopia island just beyond Elliot bay by canoeing,...After landing we walked along its shores over shoals into Elliot bay whence we descended to Utopia island by boat".[3] By 1830 all these crossings were complete making Pembertone Passage safe for shipping
