Burien is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Burien was founded in 1907 by Swedish immigrants who arrived on the railroad. The first store and post office were both established in 1907. In 1911, the name of the town was changed to Burien after then-Governor Earl Burlingame ordered it be given its new name because of its location on the south bank of what is now Interstate 5 (I-5). Burien, Washington is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Burien is located on Puget Sound and is bordered by Lake Union to the north and east; Olympia to the south and west; and Bellevue to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what becomes Burien were Dutch sailors who landed there in 1692 after sailing from Holland via Asia Minor. In 1792, John Jacob Astor set up shop in what would become Burien as a trading post with his partners Nicholas Biddle and Ebenezer Morse. By 1815, when British fur trader George Vancouver explored Puget Sound for ideas about colonizing new land in North America, he had heard of an area called "Burien" on King's Island that could be developed as a site for permanent settlement. He recommended it to his superior officer Alexander Graham Bell, who then commissioned Captain David Thompson (founder of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) to explore it further. Thompson's party arrived at Burr Harbour on April 15, 1825 and began their journey upriver towards what became Seattle on April 26th. On May 12th they reached Gold Hill which they named after General James Kensey's gold rush conspiracy theories about rich veins of silver being found nearby (the hills near Gold Hill are now home to Boeing Field). At this point they divided into two groups: one continued upstream while the other descended river bank into buriennaBay where they built Fort Dearborn (now Seattle Center). They left behind evidence of their explorations including three cannonsball bearings still embedded in some rocks near Gold Hill today- these have been dated back to 1825! The discovery of gold led many people from Europe overland through Asia Minor onto American soil during this time period including Astor who also founded Tacoma [now Tacoma]. After weeks of searching no finds were made so Thompson returned south on July 1st with news that more than $5 million worth of gold had been discovered but noone has been able to confirm this ever happened because records show only $1 was taken! This excitement didn't last long as word soon spread throughout Puget Sound that somebody had found something else valuable so another expedition was sent out under command by Captain John Cushing who reported finding a large quantity of coal resources situated between Everett and Bremerton along with several thousand acres (about )of land around present day Burien taking up most of what is now known as Waterfront Park Reserve & Discovery Landing Area/Former Naval Shipyard Site
On January 6, 1871, the first train to reach Burien arrived from Seattle. It was a Pullman car and contained thirteen passengers. The town had only been established two months before. The town was named after John Fitch, an early settler in the area. He donated land for the town and built a house in 1875. In 1911, Burien became one of the towns in King County when it was joined with Lynnwood to form the new county.
