In 1907, Congress enacted legislation creating King County as a county within Washington Territory. This created new boundaries for Burrien which straddled both sides of Puget Sound. At that time it had a population just over 2 thousand people living on a total area just over square miles (about 0.8 km²). By 2000 it had grown to 7 thousand people with an area almost twice that size (about 2 km²). Today'sBurrien owes its growth to many factors: its location on Puget Sound; its access to education and industry; and its ties to nearbySeattle and Tacoma
