There is no one definitive answer to this question, as the history of firearms in Burien, Washington goes back many years. In the early 1800s, local residents in the town of Burien began using guns for hunting and self-defense. By 1875, Burien had a population of around 100 people and there were already several handguns available for purchase. In 1903, an ordinance was passed that limited handgun sales to those who could demonstrate a need for them. This law was repealed in 1934 after public opposition from gun owners. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Burien saw an increase in activity related to knife fighting and piracy. As a result, the town developed its own knifefighting culture which persists to this day. In 1947, new laws were passed that regulated ammunition and gun ownership within city limits. These Laws were repealed in 1959 after more than 60% of residents voted against them.
Burien is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 791 at the 2010 census. Burien is located on Puget Sound and is bordered by Seattle to the north, Bellevue to the east, Redmond to the south, and Issaquah to the west. The city is named after George Vancouver's landing in 1792 on what is now Burien Peninsula. The first recorded mention of "Burien" was in 1853 when Alfred Hennepin included it as part of his map of Northwest America. In 1896, John Bennett published an article about his trip through the area and noted that he had not seen any other town with a post office called "Burien". By 1907, several businesses had opened up in Downtown Burien including a grocery store, dry goods store and a clothing store which were all successful until World War II when they closed down due to lack of demand. However, during World War II there was an increase in military activity due to the war effort so much so that some families decided to move out into towards Everett or Tacoma instead of stay within the city limits. This change also contributed to Downtown Burien's decline beginning in 1950s as many businesses moved out or were taken over by larger companies who offered better prices and services than their predecessors did. In 1971–1972 construction began on Interstate 5 which ran through Downtown Burien from Bellevue Boulevard eastward until it crossed SR-520 near Interlocking Drive. At this point most businesses along I-5 closed down as traffic became too high off-road for them to operate profitably (although one small business still operated until 1997). This event helped spur development around Interlocking Drive starting with David Ladd's restaurant which opened up in 1975 serving Indian cuisine (the first restaurant ever opened up in King County) until it was replaced by Safeway three years later followed by Joes Pizza place open up in 1986 which has been continuously operational since then (it currently has 4 locations across Western Washington).
