Named for him, the city developed around Morton's ranching operation that included a flour mill and sawmill before becoming an agricultural center in the 1920s with cotton and other crops growing throughout most of its history until prohibition caused a decline in production during World War II. Afterward, much of Burien's economic activity centered around service industries such as truck stops and convenience stores while some residential development took place downtown since burials were then allowed outside main roads without fear of vandalism or looting by transient populations roaming through rural areas during these years when personal property was not protected by law enforcement or private ownership/licensing procedures
