The Burien-Anacortes Metropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 11,510 as of the 2012 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. Burien was founded in 1881 by John Buriens and Mary Jane Dirksen as an agricultural community on 7 acres (2 ha) near present-day Burien Center. The first store and post office were established there in 1882. After residents started to arrive from Ferry Lake and other nearby villages in 1889, they named their new community after British Columbia's Victoria City (now Vancouver). They built a two-story wooden school district house on what is now Fourth Street in 1891; it served as the town's first courthouse until 1909 when a brick courthouse replaced it. In 1904, Burrens voted to rename their new town after President Theodore Roosevelt because he had helped raise money for its construction while he was governor of New York City. In 1912, local voters approved creation of the King County seat from portions of Puget Sound which then formed Seattle Township including parts of Ballard and Burien. On July 1st 1915, when King County was created following statehood under the new Washington Constitution, both cities—Burbank and Seattle—began to merge into one city with no remainder split among them administratively or demographically speaking; all citizens within either city were single tax payers subject only to that city's taxes plus countywide assessors' assessments (equivalent to property taxes today). This arrangement continued until December 15th 1959 whenSeattle voters passed an ordinance annexing neighboring unincorporated areas including those now located inside Bellevue limits; these annexation votes effectively destroyed any remaining vestige of separation between Bellevue and Burien neighborhoods prior to amalgamation into one municipality. It is the county seat of King County and the most populous municipality in King County. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Burien on November 21, 1851 when John Waddell and three other men set out from Seattle to establish a fur trading post near present-day Burien. After two years of travel they reached their destination on January 6, 1853. They named their new settlement "Burien" after British Columbia's Port Moody which they had seen on their journey. The first post office was established in Burien on March 3, 1853. In 1862 the town was renamed Seattle after General David Denny who had led American forces during the war against Mexico City; however it reverted back to its original name on July 1st 1865 whenSeattle itself became an incorporated city with same boundaries as King County. On May 14th 1906 Burien annexes neighboring Des Moines Township effective date of annexation proclamation by Mayor J H Giannini & Councilmember A Stiegler proclaiming that “the people of Des Moines Township demanded annexation for reasons that are fully understandable and justifiable under our unique situation as an agricultural township with excellent water resources and opportunities for general development within our limits” due to increasing competition from neighboring Seattle for land development services including commerce and industry growth following completion of Interstate 5 (I-5).
