Bremerton is located on Puget Sound and its waters comprise an estuary that provides access to both the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Elliott Bay. The city center is anchored by the Wharf District, which has several high-rise buildings including the Bremerton Gateway Center and Harborview Tower. Other districts include Capitol Hill and Eastside. The area now known as Bremerton was first settled by fishermen in the late 19th century. In 1852, James Wylefords Landing opened on what is now State Street near present day downtown Bremerton. By 1878, another landing had been developed at Puget Sound's Head Start Point on the east side of Tacoma harbor where commercial fisherman could load their catch onto ships for shipment upriver to markets in Seattle or Vancouver. A wharf was built at this location in 1879 and began operations as Puget Sound Fisheries Company Ltd.. In 1902, when Tacoma became a city Limits were put into effect limiting growth west of State Street to one-half mile (1 km). At this time there were only six residents living within limits established around town; four men who ran ferry services between Tacoma and Bremerton waterfront with their businesses; two small merchants who did not have any land within limits; and one gentleman who leased land from developers east of state street for development into housing units which he would then lease back to original owners upon sale or condemnation from government officials during prohibition times In 1907 Congress passed act creating Kitsap County including all of what are now Kitsap Peninsula except for present day Seattle In 1912 An Act providing For Establishing A Taxation District For The Territory Of Washington And Its Dependencies Was Passed Which Included The Town OfBremerton In 1915 This Act Led To creation Of Port Authority Which Would Be instrumental In Development Of Commercial waterfront areas InBREMERTON Today Port Authority Became operational On July 1st 1916 With Opposing Action From City Limits And Continued Growth WestOfStateStreetThruOutlawsAndProhibition Times
