Bremerton, Washington is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The name "Bremerton" comes from Captain George Bremer who served as commander of the first military post in present-day Puget Sound and founded what is now Bremerton on December 12, 1847. The first permanent settler in what is now Bremerton was Capt. George Bremer who arrived on December 12th, 1847 with his family from Portsmouth Rhode Island. He established a trading post at what is now the intersection of State Route 5 and Tacoma Road. In 1861, when Tacoma was incorporated as a city, Bremerton became its second city and continued to serve as its interim mayor until 1865 when Mayor Dickson resigned to become state treasurer. In 1916 The Boeing Company opened an aircraft manufacturing plant here which has continued to grow ever since creating many jobs for locals and visitors alike throughout the years. On July 1st 1990 King County received approval from voters to annex much of rural Thurston County making it one large county with no geographical boundaries between Thurston County and King County although both governments have continuing jurisdiction over their respective areas within that county includingBremertion

The railroad helped to spur development in the area, and Bremerton became a major shipping point for freight and commerce. By 1940, Bremerton had become an important center for education and industry. In recent years, the town has seen a decline in population due to problems with crime and economic decline.
