In 1851, Bremerton became an incorporated city and was renamed Tacoma; Tacoma was again renamed in 1959 as Bremerton after Captain John A. Bremer who had died two years earlier while exploring Puget Sound for Russian settlement opportunities and purchases). In 1907, the Navy acquired land near present day Fourth Street and South Street for training ranges used by the Naval Militia; this area became known as Naval Air Station (NAS) Alaskan (later NAS Whidbey Island). The United States Naval Observatory was founded on April 25th, 1887 by Rear Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan with help from President Grover Cleveland. The observatory became part of Smithsonian Institution upon Mahan's death in 1901. It falls into two categories- astronomical research which is conducted through their staff members or students working with instruments on campus; and observing during natural events like sunrise or sunset which happens outside of their facility

Bremerton was founded in 1853 by George Washington Bremer and his wife Hannah. The town was named after General James Bremer, who served as an officer in the American Revolution. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 200 people. In 1875, the Bremers built a gristmill on the edge of town and started to produce flour for local markets. The mill later became known as the Bremerton Mill Company. The mill continued to be operational until 1968 when it was sold to a private company. In 1969, the mill was donated to the Washington State Historical Society and is now used as a museum. The history of Bremerton begins with its founding date and namesake. When George Washington Bremer arrived in Puget Sound in 1853, he saw an opportunity to start a new business that would provide jobs for local citizens. Today,Bremerton consists of over 2 hundred residents who enjoy vibrant downtown neighborhoods adjacent to pristine Lake Union; active businesses including two mills; cultural attractions like the Seattle Pacific Ballet; educational institutions such as Kamehameha Schools and WesternWashington University; recreational opportunities including beaches, forests, lakeside hikes/rides and more!
