The first permanent settler in what would become Bremerton was James Irvine who arrived with his family on July 20, 1814 from England aboard HMS Discovery in search of new land for Britain and his wife Catherine Irvine and their six children: James (1813-1885), John (1815-1865), William (1817-1883), Isabella (1819-1890), Anna (baptized December 4th 1821) and Euphemia Augusta(baptized October 12th 1824). TheIrvine family built their log cabin about two miles east of present day downtown Bremerton on Henderson Creek just south of present day Second Street. They named their property Irvine Manor after one of their many properties they acquired along their journey across North America searching for new land for England which began with John's father Arthur Irvine who had emigrated from Ireland in 1784 with his parents James Irvine and Anne Cunningham Irvine took up residence at Purdy Ranch near Goodyear Lake where they raised a family until 1840 when they sold off most assets including Goodyear Lake to developer David Boren who added highway access and developed it into today's waterfront commercial district bounded by First Street Southeast to West Seattle Avenue Northeast to Southcenter Boulevard Northwest During the early 1800s there were only scattered references to Indian traders operating along Puget Sound shores conducting trade with local tribes such as those living near Lynden Headwaters where Coast Salish people had strong seasonal encampments during winter months due to plentiful resources available nearby including salmon eggs collected near mudflats exposed during winter meltdowns behind seawall constructed between 1795–1800 following years of effort by Chief Sealthunter against Dutch fur traders operating along Sound coast In March 1800 Acting Sheriff George Snively raided Burr’s Landing claiming credit for finding lost sheep at Point Defiance Rocks which led soon thereaftermaster trader Gideon Welles agreed to pay $2 per animal found verified through voucher or “specimen” received from Native agent Joseph Rochefort located 140 miles NW at Cape Disappointment where he had explored earlier that year On April 15th 1800 Captain George Vancouver sighted land extending further than Point Defiance Rocks lying northwestward past Ballard Bay towards entrance tide estuary now known as Elliott Harbor beyond current day Burien Island . This initial sighting may have been mistaken for shoal caused by high tide running aground boats being moored offshore as deep water receded leaving stranded vessels unable return till next low tide Meanwhile lieutenant governor Alexander Dalrymple ordered Captains Edward Forbes & Robert Gray whale fisheries patrol squadron under Commodore Augustus Kemp sailed out daily morning 7 APR 1800 en route seasonally hunting sperm whales off shore waters between Elliott Harbor & Swan Islands but encountered no whales worthy pursuit so returned without catching any ballast animals within 3 days visiting again daily 22 Apr 1800 ..... Commander Kemp accordingly continued patrols.......... before departing departed Wahkiakum Harbour late afternoon 21 APR 1800 .....................
