Bremerton, Washington is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The Port of Bremerton is one of the largest and most important port operations in Puget Sound. The city is located on both sides of the Sound and has direct access to Puget Sound by road and water. The first Europeans to visit what would become Bremerton were Juan de Fuca and his party in 1792 while exploring British Columbia. They named it Mascot Point after their ship HMS Mascot which they stopped at on their way back from this new discovery. In 1847, Captain John Cound (1814-1868) sailed his brig USS Constitution into Puget Sound under the command of Lieutenant Commander George Vancouver for a scientific expedition led by Rear Admiral David Dixon Strong (1795-1868). While anchored off present day Bremerton he sighted land to the southward which he called "Mascot Point". He chartered two vessels with crewmen from Discovery Bay and sailed them northward until they arrived at Tlitlhac Island on July 15th 1847 where they disembarked their men, took possession of an empty schooner there named HMS Dolphin which had been abandoned by its owners during winter navigation season, chartered another vessel called USS Adventurer (1848), anchored near Discovery Bay about 4 miles due east of Tlitlhac Island and awaited instructions from Vancouver as to next steps ashore or along shoreline.. Thereafter Captains James Cook (1767-1845) & others made extended visits before returning home aboard HMS Erebus on November 13th 1849 en route back across Strait Of Georgia to Australia – now known as Victoria Land – via Juan De Fuca Strait..
