Gun sights have been a part of Bremerton, Washington for over a century. On January 7, 1892, the first gun sight in town was installed on the old Bremerton jail. The sighting device consisted of a director with an adjustable focus that allowed shooters to aim at distances up to 100 yards. This type of sight was also used by hunters and fishermen to300 yards. In 1916, theBremerton Rifle Club started using dirigibles as targets for their rifle shoots. These targets were made out of cloth or paper and could be moved around so that shooters could adjust their shots according to the direction the target was moving. The first permanent gun sights in town were erected in 1928 on State Avenue between First and Second Streets. These devices consisted of a crosshair with an adjustable focal plane that allowed shooters to aimed at distances up to 50 yards. In 1951, Bremerton became one of the first cities in Washington state to adopt trigger safety devices as standard equipment on all handguns. At this time, most handguns were still single action pistols which required pullers along both sides of the frame before firing (this type of pistol is still used today). Gun sights were not included with these new weapons and had to be purchased separately from various firearms dealerships across the state. The use of gun sights gradually dwindled throughout the years until they completely disappeared from local firearm usage by 1984 when handgun legislation changed in Washinton state making it illegal for citizens without license plates or registration permits to own any handguns other than those registered with police departments/firearms manufacturers. Some of the earliest businesses inBREMERTON include: Pfeiffer's grocery store (1886), Kapp Bros., lumberyards (1910-1920), Joplin shoe store (1923), Hancock Cigar Emporium (1928), Henson Coffee & Tea Company (1930-1964), Peterson Tire & Rubber Co. (1966-1999) and Northwest Lumber Co.(1968-2002). In 1966 BREMERTON formed an annex to Portland which served as its economic center whileBremerton developed its own economyannually ranking second only toPortlandin terms of GDP growth between1998and2004.. Today BREMERTON continues to be an important community with many businesses serving local customers including Quality Inn & Suites ((2006)), Starbucks((2006)), American Legion(1991)), Cascades Park District((2005)), Gambrinus Pizza((2008)), Tacoma Books ((2007)) and KOIN 6 News ((2009)). Many students attend Pierce University in Seattle while others commute intoBremerton for their jobs or education; this has resulted in a strong social fabric among locals which has helped keepBremerton vibrant over time.
The city of Bremerton was founded in 1856 by John and Anna Bremer. The city grew quickly, and in 1871 it became the county seat of Kitsap County. The city served as a transportation hub for the area until World War II when its growth slowed due to the war. After the war, Bremerton continued to grow, becoming an important center for education and industry. In 2001, the city merged with neighboring Tacoma to form a metropolitan area called Tacoma-Bremerton.
