Bremerton is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 25,853 at the 2010 census. It is one of the largest cities in Kitsap County. Bremerton's history began with the development of its present-day boundaries as a result of the 1854 annexation of what was then called North Kitsap Township. The city was founded on December 12, 1881 by John A. Denny and others as Bremerton Landing on Puget Sound after it became apparent that land grants for the town had been declined by many leaders in Olympia because they thought Tacoma would soon outstrip Bremerton's growth potential. In 1886, Bremerton sobbed into its coffee can when it learned that Tacoma had annexed most of what used to be its territory - all except for a small piece near present-day downtown Bremerton. That same year saw construction begin on what is now known as Seattle Naval Shipyard just south of downtown Bremerton, which would become one of America's largest shipyards and remain so until World War II. When war came around again in 1939, commercial shipping stopped completely at Seattle Naval Shipyard due to wartime restrictions on naval vessels' size and capability; instead, military shipping took over most activity at the yard. On September 15th 1942 during World War II USS "Alaska" sank while under tow from Seattle Naval Shipyard to anchor off Queen Charlotte Island she capsized killing all 104 aboard including twenty four Americans who were working on her refit as part of her Operation Neptune’s Spear mission The Alaskan sinking also generated world news headlines when photos surfaced showing salvage operations underway to try and determine why "Alaska" sunk following an accident some weeks earlier off California’s Coastline that left two American sailors dead and three others missing overboard
Bremerton is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bremerton–Wah Wah urban area. The first permanent settler in Bremerton was John Day on November 8, 1855. The town was founded by Howard Sibley and James Cook in 1856 as a trading post on the Puget Sound Waterway. In 1865, it became an incorporated municipality. On December 3, 1907, it merged with the adjacent city of Wah Wah to form one political entity called "Bremerton–Wah Wah". In 1959 Bremerton awarded its first high school diploma to a girl named Shirley Smith who had been working for her mother as a maid. That year also saw the opening of Northwest Pacific Technical College (now Northwest Community & Technical College). In 1967 Bremerton hosted the International America's Cup Races which were won by America's Cup challenger Canada's White Star Yacht Club. The Kitsap Mainland Bridge opened in 1965 and has since been one of Bremerton's signature landmarks and an important link between North Kitsap County and downtownBremerton. The bridge connects I-5 to I-84 just east of downtownBremertontown center
