Bremerton is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,587 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The community was founded by Captain John Bremer in 1853 and named for him. The first store in Bremerton opened in 1854. By 1860, there were twelve businesses in the town and it had a population of only 350 people. In 1865, Captain Bremer organized an agricultural society to improvelands around his town and this led to increased development and growth throughout the remainder of Bremerton's history. During World War II, Bremerton played an important role as a military base providing munitions storage and other services to the war effort. In 1951,Bremerton became home to Joint Base Lewis-McChord which housed U.S., Canadian and Australian troops until its closure in 1993. In recent years,BreMERTON has seen several significant developments including the opening of two new elementary schools (Lakeview Elementary School in 2013 and Northridge Elementary School in 2016), expansions into new housing areas such as Northpark Village (a mixed-use development located near Interstate 5),the construction of a new library building which opened on May 30th, 2017 after many years of planning and construction;and most notably the renovation of Pacific Lutheran University's main campus into BREMERTON State Community College - one of Washington state's largest institutions of higher education with more than 12,000 students from all fifty states who attend its campuses across King County.(www2)
The Bremerton area of Washington was first settled by the indigenous nations in the late 18th century. The first European to visit the area was Captain James Cook, who explored and charted what is now Washington state in 1792. In 1851, an act of Congress designated Bremerton as a port on Puget Sound. The town rapidly grew and by 1870 had a population of over 5,000 people. In 1911,Bremerton became the capital of Washington state when it was moved from Seattle. It remained as such until 1970 when Olympia took over as the capital.
