The first permanent settler in Bremerton was Augustus Woodward who arrived on June 5, 1857. He named his town after himself and his brother-in-law Elijah Bremer. Woodward also donated land to build a school and post office. On February 14, 1883, Theodore Roosevelt came to Bremerton for a speaking engagement and dinner with local businessmen before travelling the next day to Mount Rainier National Park. The dinner at the hotel attracted many people from throughout Kitsap County and Tacoma as well as other parts of Washington state including Oregon Governor John Kettlebeck who appreciated Roosevelt's visit. Rockefeller had been interested in natural resources since he was young and when he met Julius Rosenwald during his 1907 trip through Western Washington he became very impressed with Rosenwald's efforts to get natural gas resources developed in that region. When he took office as president in 1913 he began an aggressive effort to open up new oil reserves in this country which led to increased investment by Rockefeller in natural gas development around Bremerton along with other areas such as Alaska where he started an oil drilling program that has continued until this day. Newport News Shipbuilding Company was founded here by George Romney (a grandson of Mitt Romney) back on May 20th 1906 when father & son were driving out of Seattle looking for investments when they saw a large shipyard on Puget Sound called Newport News Shipbuilding Incorporated on Salmon Bayou just south of downtown Bremerton which they decided would make sense because it had world famous yards like those at Portsmouth Naval Yard and King Street Yards plus it had been familyowned for over 100 years! dad bought 50% share while son retained 50%. Note: their truck actually went into production at Newport News some years later under another name...
