The first guns to be imported into the area were pistols, rifles, and shotguns. At this time, firearms were not legal to own or use in Washington state. Firearms that did enter the state were only possessed by police officers and those who had a special license from the state government. In 1871, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which made it illegal for anyone without a permit to possess any type of gun except revolvers and shotgun shells that could travel no more than fifteen feet per day. This law was repealed in 1934. From then until 1984, Bremerton’s only regulation related to firearms was its prohibition on handgun possession on public property. This policy changed whenBremerton became a city under an ordinance adopted by City Council on November 24th, 1984. Under this ordinance all residents are allowed to purchase handguns subject to requirements such as residency and current registration with the police department.
