Bremerton, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,907 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The name "Bremerton" is an anglicized form of "Brittany". Bremerton was founded by German immigrants in 1847 and named after Julius Bremer, a local banker and politician who served as Mayor of Seattle from 1851 to 1861. The first settler in what is now Bremerton were two women who came overland from Canada in 1847: Catharine Prince and Martha Ballard. They built a log cabin on the site of present day Magnolia High School. In 1850, Julius Bremer moved his family to Bremerton from Tacoma and opened a store called the brementer & co firm which lasted until 1865 when he sold it to Halsey Allen for $845. This opened up what would become one of America's largest ports with an inventory that reached back to 1750! In 1862 Julius Bremer was elected Mayor of Seattle along with Samuel Morse Sr., brother of Alexander Graham Bell; both men were then serving their third terms in office when they were appointed US Commissioners to review British Columbia's land claims with Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna (). When they returned home they found that López had awarded most of Vancouver Island (which included what is now Bremerton) to Mexico instead! He also agreed to sell all but about 12 square miles (30 km²) around Puget Sound () back to Britain for £10 million sterling ($16 million USD). This led directly to the American Revolution because America wanted independence from Great Britain! The townspeople decided not To accept this gift and set about building their own courthouse, school, church and other infrastructure which survived until 1915 when it burned down due to weather conditions. After purchasing it from the government for $2 million dollars ($4 million CAD), developer Harry Weyerhaeuser turned it into one of America's largest inland ports with over 250 warehouses plus another dozen or so small businesses including his own brewery which he developed into one of the largest breweries east of Spokane! Bremerton was founded in 1853 by John A. Bremer and his wife, Anna L. Bremer. The town became a commercial center after the discovery of oil in the Puget Sound region. It grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1907, Bremerton annexed the towns of Pullman and Lynnwood to its boundaries. Today, Bremerton has a population of around 15,000 people and is considered an important economic center in Washington State. The city is home to two universities- Western Washington University and Seattle Pacific University- as well as numerous businesses and restaurants.
In 1847, the Oregon Territory was created from parts of the Northwest Territories. The legislature appointed a surveyor to explore and map the new territory. George Bremerton was chosen as surveyor. He surveyed much of what is now Bremerton, Washington. His survey helped create the original nucleation point for what became Tacoma in 1889.
