By 1810 there were at least sixgunsmiths operating out of Bothell and by 1830 there were over twenty. Gun magazines played an important role during these years as they allowed soldiers and settlers to buy additional firearms without having to worry about potential theft or loss. Eventually, bothell fell victim to various factors such as government regulations that limited ammunition availability, changes in technology (which made handguns more accurate than before), and competition from other towns with larger populations that had adopted similar lifestyles. The first known inhabitants of Bothell were Chief Sealth and his band of Potlatch Indians who arrived on horseback from the Pacific Northwest in 1792. In 1853, David Rankin platted what would become Bothell on land that he had purchased from the nearby Puyallup tribe. In 1865, local resident Alfred Crouse developed a millrace system which became one of the most important water resources for Bothell during its early years. In 1916, after World War I ended and America entered into World War II, Bothell's economy began to grow as soldiers returned home and started businesses such as munitions plants and agricultural equipment dealers. After several years of growth and development, however, it reached its peak during the late 1970s when many residents moved to larger towns within King County or outside Washington altogether due to high taxes and low quality of life in Bothell. Today, much like many other small towns throughout America, Bothell has experienced an increase in population due to migration from surrounding rural areas in search for more affordable living opportunities in an increasingly technology-dependent society. Although some aspects of its culture have continued to be preserved - such as its annual botanical show - overall Botheyis experiencing rapid transformation as it becomes increasingly reliant on Interstate 5 for transportation and services alike.
