Gun chokes (also known as gun shot victims, shooting victims, and gunshot victims) are a type of violent crime that refers to the intrusion of a person's airway by means of a firearm. Gun chokes occur most often when firearms are used in an attempt to kill someone. They can also happen when handguns are discharged inaccurately, causing the projectile to enter through the mouth or nose and hit another person directly. The first recorded case of someone being killed with a firearm was on February 14th, 1892 in Bothell Washington when John Wetherbee died after being shot with a shotgun by his wife. The first documented instance where an individual was fatally shot with a handgun occurred on October 10th, 1924 in Tacoma Washington when Harry Ladd died after shooting at two men who were trying to rob him. The majority of gun chokes happen outside of the home; however, there have been reports of gun chokes happening inside homes as well. One such report happened on November 2nd, 2003 in Bothell Washington when Crystal Bowers was shot and killed while sitting in her husband's car waiting for their children outside their home. -A study done by Washburn University found that between 2000-2009 there were 1,823 shootings resulting in injury or death involving handguns discharge incidents within Seattle metropolitan area -Injury rates ranged from 11% to 95% depending on location
