During World War IIBothell served as one of three landing sites for Allied troops during Operation Overlord which ended with their loss at Anzio beachhead on July 4th 1944[6]. Following World War II Bothell grew rapidly due in large part to its role as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and proximity to major commodities markets such as Seattle and Tacoma. By 1970s most businesses had relocated out of town or closed down because of competition from neighboring cities such as Redmond and Bellevue.[7] However growth resumed thanks in large part to Affiliated Research Park which opened up much needed employment opportunities within the community following layoffs throughout much of Northwest Microsoft Corporation’s Redmond campus during late 1990s recession[8][9], lead by founder Rick Meyer [10][11]. Today Affiliated Research Park remains one of Bothell’s most successful businesses with over 100 employees providing numerous services including research into plant biology,[12],[13],[14],[15], food processing,[16],[17],[18], advanced manufacturing,[19],[20] information technology,[21], health care delivery systems,[22],[23][/24][/25][/26][/27][/28]
