In 1853, a post office was established at Bonney Lake with Alfred Wiggin as Postmaster General; he served until 1865 when Leland Stanford took over that role and was replaced by his son Lyman Stanford Jr.. In 1907, Theodore Roosevelt visited Bonney Lake while on his way to Indianola where he delivered a speech on behalf ofbonnyspringsteel Co., one of several local steel companies led by Roosevelt during his term as governor of New York City from 1913 to 1921. A short distance north ofBonney Lake lies Cheney Dam which forms part of the Lower Snake River National Wildlife Refuge and has been used for hydroelectric power generation since 1938; it also functions as a reservoir for flood control purposes. To its south lies Kootenai National Forest with its high peaks such as Mount Rainier visible across most or all of the village limits

In 1925, Bonney Lake became part of King County and began to experience rapid growth as a result of its position as an agricultural center. In 1944, when King County merged with Puget Sound District to becomeKing County Regional Services Agency, BonneyLake became one of the agency's five sites. Since then, BonnyLake has seen significant development including several new schools and roads which have helped make it an increasingly popular community throughout the region. The current mayor is Danica Kirka and the Town Council is made up of 10 members with staggered terms thatends on Christmas Eve
