The first settlers in what is now Bonney Lake were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1852. A post office was established in 1853 and the community name change to Bonney Lake in 1903. The first schools were built here in 1905-06 and 1912-13, and then a public library was opened in 1959. In 1984, a hydroelectric plant was constructed here to generate electricity for theSnohomish County School District; this facility still powers most of the town today. The plant closed down in 2002 but portions of it are still used for agricultural purposes (e.g., irrigation). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,567 people residing in the town. Of these, 914 (92%) lived within walking distance of their homes; 577 (49%) lived within driving distance; and 151 (11%) resided within two hours by car or bus from their homes

In 1872, James Wickersham platted what would become Bonney Lake on land he had purchased north ofpresent-day Olympia. Wickersham renamed his new community "Bonney" in honor of General Edward Everett Bonny and decided to build a wooden post office there instead of using an existing structure near Olympia. The first postmaster general was Jno Fenton who served from 1872-1877; however, due toattrains on mail traffic at Olympia, Fenton resigned his position effective 2 December 1877 to take up duty as Postmaster General for all Washington Territory includingbonneyside In 1898, construction began onthe first dam onthe Snake River where bonneyside now sits It took over two years to complete but when it did so developers saw potential for this small town located just outside their gates They started marketing this spot as "The Gilded Age Capital OfThe Northwest", saying that here people could enjoy easy accessto jobs and education while still having close proximityto major cities like Seattle and Portland .
