In 1876 construction began on what would become Klickitat Dam and reservoir creating Bonney Lake Reservoir which became one of Redskins most popular tourist attractions due to its crystal clear water and scenic overlooks overlooking the reservoir and surrounding hillsides The community continued to grow with businesses opening up including a sawmill which produced lumber for buildings until 1971 when it closed down due to economic reasons In 1982 construction started on what would become Interstate 5 bypassing Klickitat County completely connecting Seattle with Tacoma making Bonney Lake an unimportant stop along I-5 . As development went along nearby Pompano Beach grew closer becoming an important commercial center for the area with hotels dotting the area as well as many restaurants In recent years there has been some growth back into Bonney Lake with businesses reopening or starting up including a health club/spa
In 1847, the Whitman family arrived in Bonney Lake from Oregon. The Whitman family soon moved to a farm on the eastern side of town. The Whitmans were instrumental in developing Bonney Lake and its schools and churches. They also developed a strong local economy by manufacturing goods such as shoes and bonnets. In 1862, the Whitman family sold their land to Claiborne Houghton, who established what is now known as the Houghton School District.
